First grade has been learning all about painting this year. We have been building on each lesson and we have just finished a very exciting project. First graders discussed a famous painting by Vassily Kandinsky. We learned about secondary colors and how they are made by mixing primary colors. Each first grader was able to mix colors in order to paint their projects. It was a lot of fun for everyone!

Hi Zach,
I am a third year art teacher in Colorado and I read your article in School Arts. I went to your green artroom website and your blog and am so impressed!!! You have some really great lessons, and I loved seeing how you communicate about your program and promote it in your blog! I so inspired! Thank you.
Kate,
I really appreciate your comment! I always try to make my lessons something that I would really enjoy doing, so they are both fun to teach and complete. If you are interested in the green side of things, check out http://greenartroom.ning.com
It is a site I started to allow art teachers to discuss different ways of being green in the classroom. Feel free to join!

was this the end project of the unit? this looks amazing? did you teach mini lessons?
I really don't do units with my 1st grade classes, but I build skills slowly that lead up to this project. I start with simple line/shape lessons and then build to color and the use of various media. This was done in the second half of the year last year. It was a very successful project.
