An Ode to the Art Show

It's been all cricket sound effects around the blog lately. Why? Let's think. What event that typically happens in the spring is an all-consuming vortex of time? Oh, yeah. The art show.

Pre-staging the show in the AM…on the stage.
The art teacher prior to me didn't do an art show. I'm not really sure why. She was an outstanding and well-loved teacher, but the show just never happened. I'm of the opinion that parents as well as teachers and administrators need to know what is going on in the art room. I feel compelled to show off the work that my students have done all year. I'm driven to display two pieces of artwork for every single student even though my numbers have gone up by 100 students in the time I've been at Thomas. I'd display more...if I could just get more to fit. This year, we had nearly 1,000 individual pieces of artwork in addition to the group stop motion animation film that the entire 5th grade created.

The 7th Annual Thomas Elementary Art Show was a big hit. Several hundred students, parents, and families attended to check out the amazing students work and eat some delicious cookies. The show is just up for one evening. While its time is fleeting, the art show is hugely important to my students. For the rest of the week following the show, students were telling me how fun it was and how they enjoyed showing their work to their families.
Yes the art show is a LOT of work. Things of great importance typically are.

Art Show 2014 is in the Books!

I've been rather absent from posting over the last several weeks. Why? Two words. ART SHOW. As all of my teacher readers know, organizing and setting up an art show takes many, many, many hours. Every spare moment I had at school went toward making name tags, organizing work, creating signs, etc. The list of things to do is always exceedingly long.

The 6th annual Thomas Elementary Art Show was last week and went quite well. Over 1000 pieces of artwork were on display and the 5th grade stop motion films premiered. Attendance was spectacular. It is worth all of the work to see my students proudly telling their parents all about their work.

I must give many thanks to several 5th grade student volunteers who gave up a week's worth of lunch recess to help with anything they were asked to do. I also need to thank my wife who took a vacation day to help set up the show. Finally, thanks to the Thomas PTO for providing cookies as well as volunteers to help take the show down at the end of the evening. Overall, the show was a huge success. Best of all, it's done now!
My daughter loved her second art show!

A fun Pinterest inspired idea for drawing during the show.

Thomas Elementary Art Show

The art show!  The event we have been working hard the entire year for!  The art show this year was incredibly successful.  Each student had at least one piece of artwork in the show, but most had 2 or even 3.  The art show is the official unveiling of the new bottle cap mural as well as the premier of the 5th grade claymation film.  I am lucky to have such supportive parents and staff at Thomas.  The show was very well attended and everyone had a great time.  Thanks to PTO parents and volunteers for helping out and providing cookies and punch.  I also want to thank my wife, Heather, for taking a vacation day from work to spend the day helping me out!

The Thomas Art Show!

The 2nd annual Thomas Art Show was a huge success.  Approximately 250 people came out to see nearly 900 pieces of artwork on display.  Each student had at least two pieces of work.  The 5th grade claymation film also premiered. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out!

Thomas Gallery Hop

I want to thank all of the students, parents, friends, and teachers who came out to our first annual Thomas Elementary art show last night. The event was extrememly successful and I already have many ideas to expand the show for next school year. Thomas students are incredibly talented artists and deserve the attention they received at last night's show.
